Russia warns of consequences if Sweden and Finland join NATO.
The issue of NATO membership has been at the top of the security policy agenda in the two countries since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
It is expected that the question of membership will be decided in the coming weeks and that applications may be submitted before the NATO summit in June.
“It is up to the authorities in Sweden and Finland to decide. But they must understand the consequences such a step will have for our bilateral relationship and the entire European security structure,” spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in the Russian Foreign Ministry stated. She did not specify what kind of consequences may follow.
Zakharova adds that NATO membership “is unlikely to strengthen their international prestige.”

So far, the only specific Russian (counter-)threat has been they would move nuclear missiles up to the border and into Kaliningrad.
I wonder about Putin! He is always trying to terrorise the west by claiming that the consequences will be terrible etc. The worst thing he can do is that he will push the nuclear button. But he knows that if he does that he will also be destroyed. If he is smart let him develop his country that is still backward while it is ne of the most powerful countries. Th Russian people are suffering, so why not he improve their life instead of making war against Ukraine foe a stupid reason. Ukraine or any other nation has the right to do whatever it likes as long as it does not threaten another country.
I wonder about a lot of things. Why does someone commit murder-suicide instead of just divorcing their spouse and moving on? People can be very illogical in their thinking. Not everyone thinks as I do, and this causes problems between nations.
