The separatist leaders in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine have ordered the mobilization of military forces.

“I encourage my fellow citizens to come to the military registration offices. Today, I have signed a decree on mobilization,” Denis Pushilin, the leader of the separatist-controlled breakaway region of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine since 2014, stated.

Shortly afterward, the separatist leader in Luhansk, Leonid Pasechnik, also announced a similar mobilization.

The statements come after the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said it had registered several hundred ceasefire violations with a significant increase in the number of attacks on the front lines in eastern Ukraine in recent days.

Mass evacuation

“I urge all men in the republic who are able to hold a weapon in their hands, to stand up for their families, their children, their wives, and their mothers,” Pusjilin said.

On Friday, the two separatist leaders announced that they had ordered a mass evacuation of civilians to Russia.

The two leaders justified the evacuation with fears of an imminent attack by Ukrainian government forces. They stressed that the authorities in the Rostov region of Russia had made preparations to be able to receive everyone who crosses the border.

“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj will in the near future order his soldiers to launch an offensive,” Pushilin claimed on Friday.
