A record number of Norwegians chose to take a holiday throughout Norway last year.

Norwegians took 20.5 million domestic trips

Over the course of 2021, a record number of Norwegians decided to holiday within the country. Statistics Norway has found that 20.5 million trips were taken in Norway during 2021. Boyd Oyier, chief consultant at Statistics Norway, said that domestic tourism levels were almost the same as pre-pandemic levels.

He told NTB that “travel activity returned to normal levels in 2021, but with far more trips in Norway than was usual before the pandemic. While before the pandemic we made between 60 and 70% of our trips within our own national borders, this proportion was over 90% in 2021.”

The pandemic, and its restrictions on international travel, restricted the number of international holidays though. Though the number of domestic trips had increased dramatically, the number of Norwegians taking holidays overseas had plummeted. Over the course of 2021, Norwegians took only 1.86 million trips abroad a figure that was 7 million fewer than in 2019.
