A betrayal of the poorest

Millions of people are affected each year by climate-related disasters, the Red Cross points out, disappointed by the outcome of the UN Climate Change Conference.

“Lack of climate unity is a betrayal of the poorest,” said Red Cross Secretary General Bernt G. Apeland.

“The international community has a duty to do everything that can be done to make people and communities in vulnerable areas as prepared as possible to cope with both severe natural disasters and more extensive changes due to climate change,” he adds.

A recent report from the International Red Cross Committee estimates that 200 million people every year may be in need of emergency relief following climate-related disasters by 2050, if nothing is done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
