Around 300,000 Swedes are estimated to have lost their sense of smell after having COVID-19. Hundreds of patients are queuing for help.

Sweden has two clinics for smell and taste disorders, one at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, the other in Lund. While the first opened in September, the one in Lund has existed for several years.

“We get patients from all over Sweden. I get letters home, and I’m contacted from all sides,” Charlotte Cervin-Hoberg, a biomedical analyst, stated.

Infections, head injuries, and neurological diseases can also affect the sense of smell, but most people seeking help now are corona patients.

COVID-19 can cause the loss of the sense of smell and distort the sense of smell. Eva Höglund from Sweden says that everything except vanilla ice cream tastes and smells like cigarette butts or rotten meat.

“I look at strawberries, but it smells so bad that I almost throw up,” Höglund, who got COVID-19 in April 2020, said.
