Norway is set to receive 1 million new doses of the Moderna vaccine. With that, adult Norwegians could be fully vaccinated by mid-September. At the same time, the reopening timeline is being accelerated.

Norway is getting access to the extra doses because Poland no longer needs them.

The doses are in addition to the total of 358,000 doses Norway received in July from, among others, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania. Norway has received over 1.3 million extra vaccine doses in a short time, the government stated in a press release.

“With this delivery, all adults over the age of 18 will be fully vaccinated during the first two weeks of September. That means that Norway can return to a more normal everyday life more quickly,” Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) noted.

All adult Norwegians could thus be fully vaccinated in the days around election day on Monday, September 13.

“That means that the reopening is also accelerated by two weeks,” Solberg told the newspaper VG.

Vaccination of children and adolescents

The extra doses also mean that the decision to vaccinate children down to the age of 12 can now be accelerated.

Solberg told NTB that the government is now waiting for the professional decision basis to be able to make a decision. At the same time, the extra vaccine doses mean that the decision to vaccinate children down to the age of 12 will be accelerated.

“We are now waiting for the decision basis, which is a summary of what we have seen from other countries. But it is clear that the sooner we finish the vaccination of those over 18, the sooner we can get started with those under 18,” Solberg told NTB.

“We have already started vaccinating those under 18 with underlying diseases,” she added.

At the same time, it is uncertain whether there will be more good news about the corona situation during Friday.

“We will get back to the issue during the press conference later today, but this is the most important and biggest good news, namely that we can finish vaccinating everyone over 18 years even faster,” she said.

The extra vaccine doses will arrive in Norway next week. The doses will then be distributed to the municipalities the following week. According to FHI, the extra doses mean that the population will be fully vaccinated two to three weeks earlier than expected.
