Norway is preparing to be able to take in more than 30,000 refugees from Ukraine. The ambassador from Ukraine predicts that around 10,000 will come to the country.

“Ukrainians on the run must think twice before applying for asylum in Norway,” Ukraine’s ambassador to Norway, Vyacheslav Jatsiuk, told the newspaper Aftenposten.

So far, around 2,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Norway. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) is preparing for the possibility of up to 30,000.

“We can perhaps expect around 10,000,” Jatsiuk said.

Expensive

According to Jatsiuk, the explanation is that the way to Norway is long. It is more difficult to travel to Norway than to countries west of Poland, Romania, and Hungary. In addition, Norway is among the most expensive countries in the world to live in.

The ambassador nevertheless emphasized that Norway is a warm and inclusive country.

“I would like to thank the Norwegian society and the Norwegian authorities on behalf of the Government of Ukraine. Norway is leading by example,” Jatsiuk said.

According to the UN, three million people have already fled Ukraine as a result of Russia’s invasion. Ukraine has over 40 million inhabitants.
