A total of 39 coronavirus cases have been detected in Bergen in the last 24 hours. That is 27 more than the same day last week.

“Today, the number of infection cases is high,” infection control chief Egil Bovim in Bergen told the newspaper Bergens Tidende (BT).

Of the 39 infected on Tuesday, twelve are in their 20s, and eleven are in their 30s. Furthermore, 19 of the cases are among close contacts, while seven are imported infection cases. Six have an unknown route of infection, and seven cases have not yet been clarified, Bergen Municipality stated.

Part of the reason for the increase in infection is that close contacts want to test themselves out of quarantine on day seven, the municipal infection control chief added.

“It is not rare to see people have positive tests on day seven, especially now that we are so quick to put people in quarantine. We want to put people in quarantine early, but then we also get this bump in the infection numbers seven days later,” Bovim told BT.

Outbreaks in nightclubs

Eight cases of infection have also been linked to outbreaks at several nightclubs in Bergen.

In addition, Bergen is a major summer attraction for tourists, and several hundred tourists are visiting the city during the summer holidays.

“Right now, we have a fishing boat that is here, and which has infected people on board. The crew isn’t from Bergen, but they increase the number of infection cases,” Bovim said.

The infection trend in Bergen, which is Norway’s second-largest city, has been rising in the last week.
