The bishops recommend that the congregations postpone the spring confirmations until the autumn due to the uncertain corona situation.

According to newspaper Dagen, an email was sent out to all priests and churchwardens in Bjørgvin diocese on behalf of all the country’s bishops on Thursday morning.

In the email, the bishops say that due to the uncertain situation with the pandemic’s development, they have agreed to recommend that local evaluations be made regarding whether the confirmations planned for the spring should be postponed until autumn.

In the email, the bishops mention the following reasons for the recommendation: the outbreak of the virus mutation, uncertainty about which rules will apply to how many people can gather and travel between regions in Norway, and the speed of the vaccination process.

On Wednesday, Dagen wrote that Birkeland parish in Bergen, which is one of the country’s largest, has chosen to postpone spring confirmations until the autumn.

Church council meetings will be held on Thursday and Friday. Halvor Nordhaug, bishop of Bjørgvin, believes that the postponement of confirmations will be discussed at the meetings.
