If you have ever taken part in a Norwegian Christmas celebration, you’ll know that watching “Tre nøtter til Askepott” is an absolute must. But how much do you really know about Cinderella herself?

Libuše Šafránková, better known amongst Norwegians as Cinderella in “Three Nuts for Cinderella” (in Norwegian: “Tre nøtter til Askepott”), was a Czech actress.

She was born on June 7th, 1953, in the city of Brno. Here, she studied acting and appeared on stage at the city’s Mahen Theatre, according to the Prague Reporter.

Her film debut was with a supporting role in Antonín Moskalyk‘s “Granny” (“Babička”), an adaptation of the classic novel by Božena Němcová, they further report.

Šafránková had her international breakthrough in 1973, when she played Cinderella in “Three Nuts for Cinderella.” It is this movie that most Norwegians are likely to recognize the Czech actress from.

In 1996, Šafránková played Klára in the movie “Kolya,” which later went on to win an Oscar for the best foreign film.

Šafránková tragically passed away aged 68 years old on June 9, 2021. She is remembered by husband Josef Abrhám and son Josef Abrhám Jr, as well as countless fans around the world.

A Christmas classic

“Three Nuts for Cinderella” is still a popular Christmas film in the Czech Republic, as well as in other European countries.

In Norway, the film is an essential part of the Christmas celebration and is usually shown on the morning of December 24th.

A testament to the film’s popularity in Norway, a remake starring Norwegian pop star Astrid Smeplass is currently being shown in cinemas across the country.
