The Coronavirus may return as a seasonal virus, several researchers believe. But it may become less dangerous in the future.

– “I think it’s reasonably inconceivable to think that the Coronavirus would disappear completely from an international perspective,” says Gunnveig Grødeland, a senior researcher at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oslo to NRK.

Once the basic immunity is established in the population, it will come back as a milder seasonal virus, she believes.

– “Since this virus is believed to be affected by temperature, one may not be able to contract it during a hot summer, but in the fall when it gets colder, one may be able to catch it. That way you can have a seasonal outbreak variant established,” says Grødeland.

She explains that if you have already had the Coronavirus, you have accumulated some form of immune response to it.

“If the virus comes back in a milder form, we do not need as strict measures,” says John-Arne Røttingen, Director of the Research Council.
