Two men, aged 29 and 35, were placed in detention by the Oslo District Court and were charged with gross social security fraud. Økokrim assumes that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The men were arrested on Tuesday as well as several other people in a coordinated action carried out by Økokrim.

The charges relate to gross social security fraud of the support plans put in place due to the pandemic and gross theft of the proceeds from said fraud.

Review from Nav

The investigation started after Økokrim  had received a report from Nav at the end of July, as well as a report they received from the Unit for Financial Intelligence based on suspicious transactions.

Incorrect information must have been given in order to be paid close to four million kroner.

The parties must have used the automated processes that Nav set in place to streamline the processing.

Expect more reviews

-”We have identified this as a threat during our threat assessment. We believe it is likely that the support plans established in relation to the pandemic will be taken advantage of.”, the Police Attorney, Daniel Sollie, of Økokrim points out to NTB.

He says that there have already been some reviews.

-”But we expect and know that there will be more. It is too early to say anything about the scope, other than we expect it to be bigger than what we have seen so far.”, says Sollie.

The police attorney does not rule out that the total amount may be greater than what they now know.
