Ten years ago, Svalbard welcomed around 3,500 tourists from October to January. Last season the figure was well over 12,000.

– “It has been a focus area for many years to make it work just as well in winter as in summer,” says Chairman Ronny Strømnes in Visit Svalbard to NRK.

He says there is still room for more tourists in the winter season.

– “There is a lot of available capacity from October to January. We can handle 3,000 to 4,000 more tourists per month,” says Strømsnes.

By August this year, 62,265 tourists had come to Svalbard, according to Visit Svalbard.
